In order to make your website work for you, you must work on it. Doing nothing will absolutely get you nothing. Adding content, keeping up with search SEO keywords that are relevant and keeping them on your site are important so that your site gets noticed by Google. The good news is this work pays off, but that bad news that you may have heard about is, you can't just "set it and forget it". Ms. Google changes her mind quite often.
Recently, Google has made major change that is all geared toward improving the user experience. One way shows up in the search alone. When you do a search, you see titles of the pages of roughly 10 sites. There are also paid ads that show up on the top and right but the titles of the 10 below the paid ads are what is called the organic search results. These titles are what the site owner has put up to help make Google notice and give some relevance to those searched keywords.
In the past, those titles were crammed with keywords and many still have not changed those titles but recently, Google has made it clear that those words must match what the site and page are all about. For example, if you see:
Restaurant in Atlanta | Atlanta Restaurant | Atlanta Restaurants
It is possible that in the old days, that may have been a good way for SEO experts to help those searches find your Atlanta Restaurant. Now Google is saying NO. They actually can and will( without your knowledge) change that title for you. After all, it is on Google and Google wants the user to see it as useful to the user, not as keyword driven. The proper way to have your title might be:
Restaurant in Atlanta | Italian Food | Premium Dining Atmosphere
