You know how they say that life is like a box of chocolates? Well, a lot of businesses tend to think the same can be said about all of the different content writers out there. You can never really know what you get--or so you might think. With so many websites out there with tons of writers to choose from, how exactly can you cut through it all to find the perfect match for your business?
While it might sound tedious and a huge responsibility to find the right kind of content writer, it really doesn't have to be. In fact, there are a couple of way you can watch out for that tell you immediately this writer means serious business.
1. Experience
Just like when you're hiring on a new employee, you have to check the experience and credentials of the writer you're willing to work with. Because while the writer is more than likely a freelancer, you're still developing a business relationship with them and need to treat it as such. That means focusing on their experience to make sure it aligns with your business. There are writers out there with excellent research skills, but it is good to find someone who has industry experience in your field and mentions such.
2. Communication
If you don't know what you want, then the writer you choose to work with certainly won't know what you want. Working on writing projects with a content creator is a two-way street of communication. You need to have a understanding of what you want and then the content writers can help make the idea into reality. If you just say "write an article on puppies," and then don't elaborate if you mean how to take care of puppies, where to find puppies, or other valuable information, then you're be dealing with a frustrating job.
3. Price
Just like naming your own price when you're traveling, you need to do the same for your content marketing budget. All of those articles, blogs, press releases and everything else cost money to make and you need to be able to provide a fair deal to a writer in order to get high quality and customized content. If you're not setting up a content budget and instead look for the cheapest solution out there, you might as well get ready to re-work and re-write all of that low quality content now (and ultimately paying more).
4. SEO & Social Media
In these times, content writers are more than just an online copywriter creating articles to make you money. Most writers tend to be multi-talented, which is a huge plus for you when you need to also create email campaigns or landing pages. However, one of the biggest skills that you need to look out for is online optimization and social media. These will be the two biggest beneficial skills to your content writing, so the writer better know what SEO and social media does!
4.5 Better Conversation
On that same topic, don't be afraid to have an open forum of conversation with your content writer. Think of this as an add-on of the above and remember to not only provide sufficient information on what kind of content you're looking for, but also talk to your content writer about SEO preferences, social media, and even including your calls-to-action to the content. Have a question about the entire process? Don't be afraid to ask. It's more than just talking at your writer, it's having a conversation with them for better content.
